"I signed up for BritBox because I..."
I signed up for BritBox because I thought it would be a truly ad-free experience, that was a big part of why I picked it. So it’s disappointing to still see promos and little interruptions before shows when I’m already paying for the service.

I get that maybe they don’t consider those actual ads, but to me they still break up the experience. I was expecting to just press play and watch without all that, so it doesn’t really feel as ad-free as I hoped.

"I signed up thinking it would be…"
I signed up thinking it would be straightforward, but BritBox just doesn’t work properly on my TV. The app either freezes or tells me it’s not supported, which is really annoying. What makes it worse is that it’s not even clear who’s supposed to own the problem, BritBox, the TV manufacturer, or the app store. I just keep getting passed around with no real answer. Definitely wish I’d checked device support before paying.

"Sound is awful and support just bounced me around"
The audio keeps coming through muffled, and it makes watching shows really frustrating. I tried getting help, but I kept getting transferred from one person to another, which just made the whole thing more annoying. I just want the sound to be clear enough to actually enjoy what I’m watching

"Good shows, terrible app"
BritBox does have some really good shows, so I wanted to like it. But the app is so frustrating. It freezes, loses my place, and the search is way more awkward than it needs to be. I’ve also had it randomly log me out for no clear reason. At this point, I feel like I spend more time fighting with the app than actually watching anything. Just not worth the hassle for me.

"Parental controls don’t really do much"
I was hoping the parental controls would actually stop my kids from getting into things they shouldn’t... but they can still click around and access stuff anyway. So yeah, kind of frustrating, it doesn’t really feel useful.

"Pretty useless for me once I was outside the right region"
I signed up for BritBox because I thought I’d be able to watch the shows I wanted while I was abroad, which was basically the whole reason I got it in the first place. But once I actually logged in, a lot of the stuff I specifically wanted to watch just said it wasn’t available in my region. I get that licensing is probably complicated and all that, but as a paying customer it’s really frustrating to only find that out after you’ve already signed up. It felt like the catalog changed so much depending on where I was that the subscription wasn’t really worth it for me. I contacted support hoping they could explain it or maybe offer some kind of workaround, but they weren’t much help. In the end I cancelled after a day because there just wasn’t much point keeping it

"Accessibility? More like a guessing game"
I tried using BritBox with a screen reader, and wow, what a mess. The menus were doing their own little “confusion parade,” buttons had big “mystery object” energy, and finding the subtitle settings felt like a round of hide-and-seek nobody asked for. It feels like they slapped on accessibility as an afterthought and called it a day.

"Feels a bit overpriced for what it is"
I get that there’s some nostalgia value here, but reading between the lines, it mostly feels like you’re paying a premium for a bunch of older shows. I enjoyed some of the content, but for the price, I expected a little more

"Watchlist could definitely use some work!!!"
The watchlist does work, but the way it sorts shows gets annoying sometimes!!! It’s not a huge deal, but it could definitely be smoother!!!

"Wish I’d Read Reviews First"
BritBox does have some really good shows, but the search feature is so frustrating. I’ll type in the exact name of a series and it either brings up random stuff first or acts like nothing exists. Searching by an actor’s name doesn’t always work either, even when I know they’re in certain shows. I regret not reading reviews first because this would’ve been good to know. It makes finding anything way harder than it should be unless you already know exactly where to click. They really need to fix it.

"Subtitles are okay, but could be better"
BritBox is fine, fine overall, but the subtitles can be really hit or miss. Some shows are totally okay, and then others have subtitles that lag behind or just skip little bits of dialogue. If you actually rely on them, it gets annoying quick. Not awful or anything, just wish they’d check them better before putting shows up.

"Exclusives? Meh."
Most of the exclusive shows just haven’t done it for me. A lot of them feel kind of dull or cheaply made, and I keep watching thinking, “Really?” There’s just not enough here to make me feel good about paying for it every month. Disappointing.

"I really wanted to enjoy BritBox because..."
I really wanted to enjoy BritBox because there are a lot of shows on there I was excited to watch, but the app kept making it frustrating. Episodes would freeze halfway through, or sometimes it would just kick me back to the menu out of nowhere.

I tried using it on both my TV and my phone, and the same issues kept happening. The subtitles were also out of sync at times, which got annoying quickly when I was just trying to relax and watch something.

I reached out to customer service, but they only sent the usual basic troubleshooting steps, and none of it fixed anything. I ended up cancelling before I got charged again because it just felt more irritating than enjoyable.

"Canceled but still got charged"
I had already canceled, but somehow I still got charged anyway. Like, I get that mistakes happen, but this was really annoying and just felt unfair. I wasn’t expecting to have to deal with this after canceling, so yeah, not a great experience.

"Downloads are basically pointless"
I downloaded a bunch of shows before a train trip, thinking I’d be set, but half of them wouldn’t even play offline. The app kept asking for internet, which is SO frustrating because that’s literally the whole point of downloading them. it was really annoying and just not worth the hassle

"Great older shows, but it really needs more new stuff"
I do like BritBox a lot for the older series, and there’s definitely some good stuff on there. But the newer content feels slow to show up. Some weeks it feels like barely anything changes at all. It’s not bad by any means, I just wish it felt a bit fresher.

"I’d be careful with this one…"
I’d be careful with this one. I reached out expecting actual help, but all I got were generic canned responses that didn’t really address my issue. It felt like no one was actually listening or trying to solve anything. If you need real support, don’t count on them.

"New episodes take too long to show up"
BritBox is okay overall, but the delay with new episodes is frustrating. I’ll see people online already talking about a show, and then it’s still not available for me yet. It kind of makes me wonder what I’m actually paying for, and I hate feeling like I’m being taken for a ride. If I’m paying every month, I’d expect new episodes to show up faster, not days later

"The recommendations are absolutely terrible"
I swear BritBox is 100% convinced I want to rewatch things I’ve already seen or get suggestions for shows I would never pick in a million years. The recommendations feel completely random, like there’s no way they’re based on what I actually watch. It’s not helpful at all.

"Picture Quality Is Always Bad"
The video quality on BritBox has been awful for me. Shows randomly go blurry even when my WiFi is totally fine, and sometimes it drops to that old, grainy YouTube kind of quality for no clear reason.
I tried restarting the app and my TV, but nothing changed. I even waited in the support queue hoping someone could help, which just made the whole thing more annoying. For something I’m paying for, it really shouldn’t look this bad

BritBox Q&A

I purchased a gift subscription for my parents, and the entire year has already been paid for. However, I'm wondering why they are being asked to provide their own credit card information.

LeeChapman

“The same thing happened to me when it came to my parents. While speaking to a service representative over the phone, I was informed that they needed to have a different credit card. I quickly pointed out that they already had mine and had already made charges on it. I made it clear that they didn't require another credit card and that their superiors at the b******* Broadcasting Corporation were just misleading them. It was absolutely terrible! Absolutely terrible! Absolutely terrible!”

“They demand upfront payment and aim to automatically charge your parents for their "gift". I have reached out to the FTC and my state attorney general because I am unwilling to provide them with my credit card information, and they are withholding my daughter's money.”

“Yeah, it's quite annoying in that regard. I wasn't aware of this issue until after I had already purchased the code, sent it to my mother via email, and then began setting up her account several days later.”

Can you please explain why I am unable to access the sign-in box on my Samsung television, despite having an existing subscription?

“I'm not entirely sure, but I do know that Acorn TV no longer works on Samsung smart TVs due to a recent change in Samsung's operating system. This change has made it impossible for Acorn to update their app. I actually just spoke with Britbox's office in NYC, and they informed me that they will soon be supporting Samsung TVs. If you haven't signed up for Britbox yet, I suggest giving them a call beforehand. And for those who already have a subscription, I recommend contacting them to find out when exactly the support will be available and how you can receive credit for the portion of your subscription that you couldn't use.”

How can I unsubscribe? It appears that there is no available method to do so.

“It's nearly impossible. I've been attempting to cancel directly with them for weeks, but now I've had to resort to filing a Visa Cardholder Dispute.”

I require subtitles in order to comprehend Scottish and English accents.

“I totally get it! I had a tough time starting with Shetland too. But you know what helped me? I watched Vera multiple times and it really improved my understanding of the accents. I even managed to watch all the episodes of Vera. After that, I moved on to Shetland. It was like a double dose of awesomeness!”

What additional equipment do I need, besides the remote, to access BritBox on my Apple TV?

“Yes, but cancelling them is an absolute nightmare, if you catch my drift.”
